Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®

About Upsilon Omega Omega

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 15, 1908. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® was founded to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be supreme in service to all mankind. The sorority is composed of ten regions, including the international region. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® is dedicated to improving our communities through various programs to target the needs of our local communities.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Upsilon Omega Omega Chapter was chartered on May 9, 1998 and is headquartered in Irmo, South Carolina. The foresight of Upsilon Omega Omega began with the vision of her three insightful charter members, Malicia Sherman, Audria Pendergrass and Emily McCants, and evolved into an interested group of sixteen young women known as the Emeralds of Excellence. The Emeralds of Excellence persevered many months and worked hard in the community until the reality of Upsilon Omega Omega was established.

Upsilon Omega Omega continues to be supreme in service through a multitude of programs. Some of our programs include The Cinderella Project, a partnership with the SC Bar Association Young Lawyers Division to provide gently worn prom dresses and accessories free of charge to high school students; the Still Standing Survivors’ Luncheon, where we honor members of the community who have survived various health and personal crises such as HIV/AIDS, breast cancer and infertility. We sponsor voter education drives to register voters and educate the community about the voting process.

Upsilon Omega Omega is a firm supporter of health initiatives such as the Palmetto Health Foundation’s Walk for Life, the American Cancer Society, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Stroke and Heart Disease Awareness and Alzheimer’s Disease and Caregiver Support Programs. We also provide annual assistance to senior citizens residing at a local residential facility; collaborate with religious organizations to provide essential services to the homeless population, and youth aging out of the foster care system. Our annual Jazz & Art fundraiser provides funding for many of our chapter programs.

In early 2018, under the direction of the South Atlantic Regional Director, Upsilon Omega Omega advised the historical chartering of Upsilon Zeta chapter at Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina. Upsilon Omega Omega is the graduate advising chapter to Upsilon Zeta.
